What Happens at the Bicycle Safety Rodeo?

This event is packed with activities that blend fun with essential safety education. Here’s what your family can look forward to:

Helmet Fitting Station

Volunteers from the BayCare Safe Routes to School Program, led by Kristi Nalls, will ensure your child’s helmet fits perfectly. Did you know? Proper helmet fitting can significantly reduce the risk of head injuries while biking.

Safety Course

The Tampa Police Department Bicycle Operations and Response Unit will oversee two mini courses that mimic real-world road conditions. Kids will learn to navigate stop signs, traffic cones, and other obstacles, all under the guidance of skilled officers.

Free Helmets and Bikes

While supplies last, kids will receive a free bicycle helmet, courtesy of sponsors like onbikes and FDOT. In previous years, hundreds of helmets and even new bicycles were distributed to participants.

Bikes Available for Use

No bike? No problem! Bikes will be available for kids to borrow during the rodeo, so everyone can join in the fun.

Road and Event Safety Tips

The Children’s Gasparilla Parade attracts thousands of families, making safety a top priority. Whether you’re biking to the event or participating in the rodeo, keep these tips in mind:

  • Always Wear a Helmet: Both kids and adults should wear properly fitted helmets.
  • Plan Your Route: Many streets will be closed for the parade. Check the event’s road closure map ahead of time.
  • Avoid Riding on Bayshore Blvd.: While Bayshore will host the rodeo, it’s also a production area for the parade and should be avoided by unauthorized vehicles, including bikes and scooters.
