Lunchbox MVPs: Dairy Snacks Kids Love
In partnership with Florida Dairy Farmers
Another school year is here, which means packing lunchboxes is probably back on your daily schedule. As parents, we want to make sure that our kids are enjoying what they eat away from home while also getting the proper nutrients to keep their bellies and brains full.
While kids may opt for items like chips, fruit snacks and cookies, dairy snacks are also a great way to get in tons of essential nutrients with foods kids love.
Though “calcium” is usually the first thing that comes to mind when hearing the word “dairy,” there are so many more reasons why it’s a top pick for being a school lunch superstar:
- Dairy foods are rich in calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D (when fortified), which work together to build and maintain strong bones and teeth during childhood.
- Dairy snacks such as cheese, yogurt and cottage cheese contain complete protein with all nine essential amino acids, which helps support muscle growth, tissue repair and overall development.
- Dairy products are good sources of nutrients like vitamin B12, riboflavin, potassium and zinc, which all help with energy production, immune function and healthy growth.
Adding cheese to sandwiches and packing lunch-stable milk boxes are easy ways to incorporate more dairy, but if you’re looking for more easy lunch inspo your kids will love, here are some of our favorite picks for easy, packable lunchbox eats.
Yogurt tubes, cups and squeeze pouches. Tip: Pack yogurt cups with some sweet granola or fruit for a fun DIY lunchbox parfait.
Drinkable yogurt “smoothies.” Tip: These are perfect for kids who may not like the texture of yogurt or those who would like an alternative to regular milk.
Cheese sticks and cubes. Tip: Pack with crackers for an extra satisfying snack or use cookie cutters to cut cheese into fun shapes for little ones.
Flavored yogurt dips. Tip: Mix whole milk Greek yogurt with ranch seasoning or a flavor of your choice for an easy and healthy dip for veggies or chips.
*When packing dairy snacks, make sure to use an insulated bag with cold packs to ensure freshness unless using shelf-stable products like select milk boxes and yogurt pouches.
