No Place Like This Place: Building Confidence, Friendship and Fun at YMCA Camps

Summer at the YMCA is where kids laugh louder, play harder and grow every day. Across Tampa Bay, children and teens arrive at the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA and the YMCA of the Suncoast ready to create memories that last a lifetime. From arts and sports to outdoor adventures and leadership development, YMCA summer camps are designed to help kids grow in confidence, character and skill.

After great success last year, the Tampa YMCA is once again offering a Preschool Summer Enrichment Program for 2- to 5-year-olds. Hosted at the Central City Family YMCA in Tampa Heights and Camp Sierra in Carrollwood, the program runs June 1 through Aug. 7, the same dates as camps for older children. Even the youngest campers can begin building social skills, exploring their interests and developing a sense of accomplishment.

In addition, the Tampa YMCA is introducing half-day camps for children who want a shorter day of fun and learning, as well as specialized camps for teens that focus on leadership, skill-building and outdoor adventures. Throughout the week, teens will build confidence, creativity and a love for the outdoors. With these additions, campers of all ages can find the perfect program to match their interests, energy and goals for an unforgettable summer.

“At YMCA Summer Camp, it’s not just play, it’s purpose,” says Matt Lewis, vice president of Operations, Membership and Programs at the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA. “Our camps provide a safe, supportive environment where children can grow, explore and discover their potential. They help kids set and reach personal goals, whether they’re trying something new, building a skill, completing a challenge or gaining confidence in themselves. Every activity is designed to encourage curiosity, resilience and a sense of accomplishment that lasts long after the summer ends.”

Meanwhile, at the YMCA of the Suncoast, Chief Youth Development Officer Beth Gettig explains, “Parents can provide their children with a fun, enriching and memorable summer experience in a supportive community. Our programs integrate values such as caring, honesty, respect and responsibility, helping kids grow emotionally and socially while learning important life skills.” With locations across Citrus, Hernando, Pasco and Pinellas counties, campers enjoy a variety of activities including swimming, sports, arts and outdoor exploration.

Safety and comfort are top priorities. In Tampa’s summer heat, hydration stations, shaded activity areas and staff trained to recognize early signs of dehydration ensure every camper stays safe while enjoying water play, games and adventures both indoors and outdoors.

Together, the Tampa YMCA and YMCA of the Suncoast provide accessible summer camp experiences for thousands of children. Financial assistance and affordable rates make it possible for families facing economic barriers to participate fully in these enriching programs. Across Tampa Bay, YMCA camps continue to nurture healthy minds, bodies and spirits, giving kids the tools, confidence and joy they need to thrive.

By the time summer winds down, campers leave with more than memories, they leave with skills, friendships and the confidence to take on new challenges. At the YMCA, every summer is a journey of growth, discovery and belonging.
