A Village of Support: How parenting workshops provide support, education and confidence
In 2024 and 2025, the Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County (DOH-Hillsborough) hosted community events, “Moving Maternal Health Forward in 2024” and “Bump and Beyond: Thriving Through Pregnancy” this past April, at the Children's Board of Hillsborough County.
The events were open to people working in maternal and child health-related fields or those interested in health issues affecting mothers. Approximately 90 attendees attended each event, with many from local community organizations such as REACHUP, Inc. and Success 4 Kids & Families.
A variety of activities focused on four topic areas relating to maternal health:
- Maternal Mortality: keynote presentation
- Doulas and Midwives: fireside
- Maternal Mental Health: presentation
- Maternal Care and Support: panel discussion
Local speakers from WIC provided educational materials to attendees, and guest speakers from the University of South Florida (USF) discussed the Tampa Bay Black Maternal Health Week Initiative.
Both events were informative and engaging, with attendees participating in interactive presentations and open mic questions and answers. Many attendees left post-event comments stating that they found the day educational and inspiring, and gained greater knowledge of community resources and a better understanding that more can be done to improve maternal health outcomes.
We are excited to host more community events in the coming months! Stay tuned to Florida Department of Health Hillsborough in collaboration with Strong Florida Moms for more engaging and informative events filled with expert speakers, interactive workshops and networking opportunities perfect for parents looking to enhance their knowledge and connect with others who share their commitment to family health and well-being.
