Kid Inspired

Motherhood. It’s not exclusive. It’s not glamorous. And it’s definitely not easy. But it’s a life-changing club that millions of women around the world clamor to join every year. Just like any other job, (and it is a job) there are good days and not so good days. There’s normalcy and surprise. And then there are the intangible benefits. ...

Neeley Heilman, 8, hopes to be an oceanographer one day, but she could be one of America’s next great writers. The second grader loves school, and she especially loves to write stories. Taking the Wheel

If your teen is counting down the days until he’s able to legally drive (if he’s not behind the wheel already), you’re not alone. But before you hand over the keys, it’s important to remember that driving is a high-risk activity, especially for young, inexperienced drivers. In fact, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens. On average, eight teens die every day from motor vehicle injuries. ...

Running on Faith, Hope, Love

One of the greatest blessings of my job is meeting wonderful people in the community. Sadly, sometimes that happens in the worst circumstances. That was the case when I met Lorraine Yaslowitz. She is the wife of slain St. Petersburg Officer Jeff Yaslowitz. Lorraine, who does not like to be called widow ...

Baby-Making Therapies

I came to motherhood later in life. For much of my young adulthood, my career as a reporter and news anchor was a priority over marriage and babies. Still, I always knew that one day I wanted to experience motherhood and all its joys. ...

There’s an App for That

App. Just four years ago, if you had told me that app would be among the most used words in our vernacular as well as among the most used software tools, I wouldn’t have believed it. But here we are today, with more than 500,000 on the market. Now our smartphones and tablets, such as the iPad, are more than gadgets. They’re on-the-go assistants that help us plan our daily lives, from work to home to leisure. So if your family is ready to lead an easier life, there’s an app for that. ...

Getting a Clue

Building a positive relationship with our children is imperative if we truly want them to trust their ability to confide in and be guided by us. Creating a foundation of respect and trust is essential in any relationship, particularly if we are to feel safe to reveal our feelings, fears and problems. As parents, we need to make it known early in the lives of our children that we are here for them and that we are learning and growing together. ...

New Beginnings

Every year many of us make New Years Resolutions. We make an effort to do the things we know we should do to live better, smarter or longer. We’ll pledge to loose weight. Or stop smoking. Or maybe we promise to find a better job or pay off the credit card bill. ...

Parenting Resolutions for 2012

A new year means new opportunities. Parents tend to get stuck in habits and compromises. By taking control of your situation, the whole family can thrive again. Here are my personal findings, outlined in more detail in my book For The Love Of Children. ...

Protecting our Children

Each year in the United States, 3.2 million children are reported as being abused or neglected, yet much abuse goes unreported, leaving in its wake untold emotional and physical damage to the victim into adulthood and possibly allowing the abuse to repeat itself in future generations. There is also a substantial economic cost to society. Total annual direct and indirect costs in the U.S. related to child abuse and neglect are an estimated $103.8 billion. In recent years, Florida has ranked fourth in the nation for confirmed cases of child maltreatment, including physical and sexual abuse and neglect. In Hillsborough and Pasco counties, there are more than 20,000 reports of abuse and neglect each year. Education for both children and adults is the most effective form of prevention, and reporting child abuse or suspected child abuse is an important form of secondary prevention. If the reported abuse is confirmed or substantiated, it does two things: stop the abuse from happening and prevent the perpetrator from offending against other children. ...
